Higden, Ranulphus

Benediktiner, von 1299 bis zu seinem Tode (1363, 12.III.1364?) meist im Kloster St. Werburgh, Chester. Mit seinen zahlreichen Fortsetzungen blieb das „Polychronicon“ in England bis zum Erscheinen von Sir Walter Raleighs „History of the World“ 1614 maßgeblich. William Caxton hat den Text der englischen Übersetzung John Trevisas in der Ausgabe 1482 (auch gegenüber dem 1480 erschienenen Teilabdruck unter dem Titel „The description of England“, GW 6670, Nachdruck GW 6675) revidiert und die Chronik mit einem „Liber ultimus“ bis 1460 fortgesetzt.

Anm. Das zwischen den Lagen 28 und 29 eingeschobene Doppelblatt enthält auf dem ersten Blatt das Ende des Liber quartus. Das andere Blatt ist unbedruckt geblieben und fehlt in einigen Exemplaren. Das bedruckte Blatt wird in Kollationsformeln dann bisweilen der vorhergehenden oder folgenden Lage zugezählt.
