Gossuin de Metz
L’Image du monde ist ein didaktisches Werk, das mit Hilfe verschiedener Quellen zusammengestellt ist und über Kosmogonie, Geographie, Astronomie und weitere, vorwiegend naturwissenschaftliche Gegenstände informiert. Der Text erscheint in Handschriften, von denen die älteste 1245/1246 datiert ist, zunächst als Gedicht und kommt in dieser Form in drei Redaktionen vor. Die Inkunabeln enthalten eine Prosafassung, die in engem Zusammenhang mit der ältesten Redaktion des Gedichtes und vermutlich bald nach ihr entstanden ist. Wenn dort gesagt wird, das Werk sei aus dem Lateinischen ins Französische übersetzt, so soll damit auf die lateinischen Quellen hingewiesen werden; lateinische Handschriften des Textes sind nicht bekannt.
In Handschriften dieser Prosafassung und in einem heute verschollenen Manuskript der ersten Redaktion in Versen wird als Autor ein Gossouin (Gossonin, Gosson, Gosoyn) angeführt; die zweite Redaktion nennt einen Gautier de Metz. Beide sind sonst nicht nachweisbar. Über die Rolle des Gossuin und des Gautier bei der Entstehung des Werkes sind unterschiedliche Hypothesen aufgestellt worden. L’Image du monde ist in einer großen Zahl Handschriften überliefert; sie ist ins Englische und Hebräische, ein Auszug ins Jiddische übersetzt worden. Ein geringfügig verändertes Plagiat ist der 1517 in Genf erschienene „Mirouer du monde“ von François Buffereau.
